The regional ballet company South Bay Ballet Arts was founded in 2004 under the Artistic Direction of South Bay Dance Center founder and owner, Kit Ashleigh-Dean. The company provides both high quality dance education and professional performance opportunities for its members, with the express purpose of developing professional level dancers. Following the tradition of the highest standards already present at South Bay Dance Center, South Bay Ballet Arts provides a valuable learning experience for serious ballet students. With its first class productions, the company enriches the cultural life of the surrounding community.

Continuing in September of 2009, serious ballet students at South Bay Dance Center may

audition to become a part of South Bay BalletArts. This regional company is dedicated to the

development of professional level dancers through high quality dance education and through

professional performance opportunities. Following the tradition of the highest standards already

present at South Bay Dance Center, South Bay Ballet Arts will provide an avenue for the most

devoted ballet students while enriching the cultural life of the surrounding community.


South Bay Ballet Arts Performance Opportunities

  • All potential members must be dancing at SBDC’s Ballet Level IIB and Pointe II (or at a comparable level).
  • Auditions will be held during the pointe auditions for Swan Lake August 15th, August 22nd, and August 29th at 4:00 PM.
  • Members must attend the South Bay Ballet Arts Company class weekly (Friday 4:30-6:00 PM during the school-term session) in addition to current level classes. Company class will begin Friday, October 2, 2009.
  • Members must meet SBDC’s minimum ballet attendance requirements for the 2009 - 2010 school term session in addition to attending SBBA company class. Please be prepared to meet your requirements.

South Bay Ballet Arts Requirements

  • The minimum requirement for ballet students in level IIB is two classes a week at SBDC
  • The minimum requirement for ballet students in level III or higher is three classes a week at SBDC
  • Pointe II students must be attending two pointe classes a week at SBDC
  • Pointe III and IV students must be attending two pointe classes a week at SBDC. Students must also attend one non-pointe class taken entirely en pointe.
  • All company dancers must be participating in one jazz or one Pilates class weekly.
  • Three misses are allowed per required class per quarter (i.e. a company dancer may miss three of each required ballet class, three of each required pointe class, three company classes, three jazz or Pilates classes from October to December, January to March, April to June). Make-ups will be accepted for technique classes only. Company class cannot be made-up during the second and third quarter as rehearsals will be taking place. Members must meet these requirements in order to be eligible for performance.
  • Students must submit an Attendance Record Sheet to the front desk at the end of each month. Attendance records will be monitored by SBBA artistic director Kit Ashleigh-Dean.
  • The SBBA season runs from September to June; company dancers auditioning in September are committed through the 2010 June Showcase. Students and parents will sign contracts to be turned in with the 1st installment payment agreeing to this season-long commitment.
  • There is a $375 non-refundable participation fee for all company members. The fee includes: Swan Lake fees, Spring Repertory Concert, June Showcase 2010 Opener and featured piece, rehearsal times and Friday 4:30-6:00 PM company class time.
  • The participation fee will be broken down into three scheduled installments and will be due the first of the month as indicated below. A $20 late fee will be assessed if scheduled installment is not paid by the 10th of the month. Members who do not pay their fees by the 15th of the month will be asked to sit out of rehearsal and class. Missed classes or rehearsals due to unpaid fees will count as an unexcused absence.

1st installment: October 1, 2009 $175
